Dr. Sylvia Smoller is the author of the novel "Chance and Consequence: a historical novel of life, love, and WWII", and a book on poetry and art "The Human Condition". She is also author of a book on science methods, "Biostatistics and Epidemiology, 4th edition"

Dr. Smoller is a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and is the Manealoff-Rosen Chair, Emerita.  She leads large national studies on women's health, and heart disease and stroke prevention. She has published over 300 scientific articles as well as a book on medical research methods. She lives in New York City.

"I have always been fascinated by the role of chance versus our own character in shaping what happens to us in life. Why does one person survive and flourish, why does another perish? Why are some people resilient in the face of misfortune while others give up?"
